Spotlight Women in Science: Vasu Chandra

Name: Vasundhara Chandra

Title: Applications Engineer II

Degree: Master of Textiles (NC State University), B.Tech in Textiles Manufacturing (VJTI)

Vasu Chandra leads the way as Fenner develops its textile coating business. When she was young, she had a natural curiosity to find out how things worked. “I was fascinated by the process of taking ordinary things and converting them into high tech solutions for everyday problems!”

As she progressed in her studies at VJTI and NC State, the science and math helped develop her understanding of polymer chemistry, and mechanics of the machinery that creates various textiles for diverse applications.

Family had a big impact by pushing her to look beyond the norms. “My biggest influence was my mother, who encouraged me to find my own path in life, even though this was not a conventional choice of career for me.”

“My professors at VJTI and NC State opened my eyes to the various textile fields. They always encouraged creative thinking leading me to design my very own eco-friendly non-woven liners for packaging!”

Her first job in the textile industry was a perfect to way to get her feet wet. “I worked as a merchandiser and graphic designer for a knitting company assisting with raw material selecting and creating new designs for the knitted t-shirts.”

That initial experience led her to Fenner as one of our Applications Engineers. She has been fortunate enough to be exposed to multiple product lines in her brief time here. “I want to continue being involved in the technical side, while learning more about the business side of textiles.”

She wants to inspire other women to chase their dreams even if they are not what is expected. “Anytime I get inquiries from young women about joining technical and manufacturing fields, I always encourage them to go for it!”
